Description
Comet over a castle, 16th-century artwork. This artwork is from 'Prodigiorum ac ostentorum chronicon' (1557) by the German author Conrad Lycosthenes (1518-1561). In this work, Lycosthenes linked the appearance of comets to events on Earth. Comets were commonly seen as portents of doom. It is now known that they are icy bodies from the outer solar system that boil and form a bright tail of gas and dust as they approach the Sun. This artwork was republished in the 13th volume (first period of 1894) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
