Description
The Eiger is probably one of the most iconic mountains in Switzerland, particularly in the Bernese Alps of southern Switzlerand. Towering 3,970 metres above the towns of Lauterbrunnen,Wengen, Grindelwald, Kleine Scheidegg and Murren, the Eiger rises in its glory and infamy.
One of three famous mountains in a closely set chain (the others being Jungfrau and Monch), the Eiger is infamous for its extremely dangerous, deadly and challenging climbs, particularly its North Face. First ascended in 1938, as made famous in the book titled 'The White Spider', many climbers have perished on this mountain including Toni Kurz (a harrowing yet tragic tale recounted in a film titled 'The Beckoning Silence').
This image was my first glimpse of the north face of the Eiger as I hiked into the Lauterbrunnen Valley and I was not disappointed. The beast of a mountain sits mightily in its granite thrown, daring climbers to attempt an ascent.
