Description
The Eisbee is an unbelievably clear freshwater lake approximately 12 kilometres to the west of a Bavarian town called Garmisch-Partenkirchen, about an hour and half south of Munich by train. The lake is glacier fed from the glacier on the Zugspitze the tallest mountain in the Bavarian alps. During the winter the region becomes a winter wonderland with an immense number of ski fields in the area. In the summer, Germans flock to the Esibee to cool off and enjoy their summer vacations.
The area is pristine and the lake unpolluted. It is little wonder that it produces such fine tasting freshwater fish as those captured in this shot, frying away on an outdoor barbecue. The pyramidal system of stakes used to skewer each fish is ingenious and allows for even cooking with little effort from the nearby cooks who were relaxing, drinking heavily from their steins of ale. Although it was off the main road, it was the smell of the frying fish that drew us and allowed us to find this hidden gem, and the taste was exquisite not to mention the simplicity of the cooking style being extremely healthy.
